Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is IEC and why is it required?

IEC (Import Export Code) is a 10-digit unique registration issued by DGFT required to import or export goods/services from India. It is mandatory for clearing customs, receiving payments from abroad, and starting international trade.

2. Is IEC registration mandatory for all exporters and importers?

Yes, unless the transaction falls under exempted categories (like personal use, government bodies). Most businesses need IEC to export/import legally.

3. How long is the IEC valid?

IEC is valid for life and does not require renewal. However, details must be updated annually on the DGFT portal, even if there are no changes.

4. Can I apply for IEC without a GST registration?

Yes. GST is not mandatory to get IEC, but it may be needed for regular commercial trade and claiming export benefits.

5. How long does it take to get the IEC?

IEC is usually issued within 24–72 hours after successful document submission and payment of DGFT fee (₹500).

6. Is Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) compulsory?

For Company, LLP, or Partnership, a DSC is mandatory for authentication. For individuals/proprietors, Aadhaar e-sign is sufficient.
